Biography

As a young man, Rich Waller pursued a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Kansas. Following a successful career building a manufacturing business, he turned back to his first love and has been pursuing  art ever since.

Dabbling with oil paints throughout the 1970’s, it wasn’t until the mid 80’s that Rich built his first serious studio. He initially began by producing three-dimensional wall art, creating relief sculptures framed and  mounted like a painting. This process required complex urethane rubber mold-making materials and casting the positives with very high psi reinforced plasters.

His passion for fine art returned his attention towards painting. Over the years his work utilized oils, acrylic, gouache and watercolor. While working in acrylics he painted abstracts, sea life and sceneries, believing their color intensity, quick drying properties and versatility with most types of substrate (canvas, paper, wood panel, etc.) provided the perfect basis for his art.

Rich now dedicates the majority of his time to painting in watercolors. With studios in Winter Park and Greenwood Village, Colorado, he captures the intricacies of landscapes, animals, florals and other content, demonstrating his versatility and willingness to explore not only subject matter, but the tools of his craft.

“I hope that my use of color will resonate with my viewers.  Even though I have a BFA in design, there was very little emphasis put on color theory at my university.  When I first started painting seriously, I realized that this was a weakness of mine and went through a period where I read every book I could find on color.  I think that my many hours of research resulted in making the exploration and interaction of color in my paintings one of my favorite parts of the process.”
